Pub and inn signs are something we really take for granted - my local is 'The Victoria Cross', and it has a sign showing the cross and a British Tommy.

The sign has been changed several times since we arrived here some 30 years ago, and it is no longer the sort of place I would go - the music is too loud and the beer too artificial, but maybe a new landlord will come along..

It would be interesting to know if the name of your local is in memory of a local who was awarded the VC.

Sadly, "genuine" public houses here in the states are few & far between. Two that I like to frequent whilst I am in St. Louis are:

It's great to see. Their are so many interesting pud names and signs over their. Unfortunately they are thin on this side of the pond. And certainly none of the history

I love the artwork on many of the pub signs!

When my brother and I were small and we were on a car journey, we played a game we called "Pub Cricket."

Each of us had one side of the road and any pubs we passed that had something with legs in the title we scored runs and if it didn't we lost a wicket.

eg Fox and Grapes was four runs and Coach and Horses was eight runs and The Lord Nelson was two runs.

I was always hoping to see a pub called The Centipede Inn!

Anne, do you happen to know if the Black Bear near Wool is still open?

Isn't that the Hall and Woodhouse pub in the High Street? - If so then yes I think it is still there. It is not a place I visit more than twice a year at the most.

Thanks Anne. I haven't been there for a while but it's nice to know it's still up and running! I believe I still have a Loonie on their currency map...
