Our square dance club had an Open House last night. The night's over and I finally got to take a picture of my casual kilt outfit... It attracted a bit of positive attention. One of the visitors, a redhead, immediately asked where my sgian dubh was. She knows a thing or two about kilted men. I don't wear it often. I didn't even wear a kilt pin that night.
The denim kilt though is my DIY, hand-sewn with 21 1-inch pleats, in the traditional way. The kilt hose is folded down/scrunched down in my new lace-up roper boots, which I'm enjoying.

Looking good, that looks like a very comfortable kilt in which to dance.I regularly do Scottish Country Dancing wearing a kilt with hiking boots, which I find much more surefooted than brogues.

A valid enough reaction -- I appreciate your straightforwardness. I find them comfortable enough to dance in. The leather sole is perfect for any floor material; carpeted in this case. And square dancing doesn't exactly require flexibility, as what barefeet can provide - it is after all basically walking around. The snug fit also protects the ankles.

Thanks. Yes, the kilt is quiet comfortable and very stable as it is quite heavy, with all its 7.5 yards of material.

I think that's a great casual look, demonstrating how a kilt can be incorporated into a modern wardrobe quite easily. Well done.

Mein, you look absolutely GREAT! A fine example of just how 'casual' can, and should, be done. Splendid!
However, I have to agree with Martin about dancing - no matter what form of dancing (with the possible exception of Clog Dancing!) - in boots. I would be all too aware of the hurt I might cause others on the dance floor! Still, as you say, square-dancing is pretty much walking - you don't have the intricate foot-work of Scottish Country Dancing, which would be nigh-on impossible in heavy boots. Ghillie pumps, not unlike ballet shoes, are the only suitable footwear for SCD.

 Anyway, enjoy!

 Take care,
 Ham.
