Please Help! Looking for leather to make a sporran
O.k, I really need your help out there! I am looking for some black leather to make a sporran. However, it seems that everywhere I go all I can get is a huge piece of it that will cost me a fortune. They want to sell me 15-20 sq ft when I only need 2. Does anyone know of any place online that sells smaller scraps of 8-9 oz black leather?
Anything you know could be very helpful. Thanks!

Is there a Tandy Leather in your town/city?
They will sell you smaller pieces.

Hi there.
I am in Australia, so maybe it is a bit different over there, but I went to a small tannery and was able to get a nice size piece of offcut leather. They generally sell it cheap and my bit only cost $10 Australian, and it was big enough to make 2 "rob roy" sporrans.
Happy hunting.

There is a Tandy Leather, but they won't sell me any small pieces. They have some scrap ones, but none of them are black. They want to sell me 15 sq ft for 80-90 dollars.

I will have to see if I have anything nearby. I have just checked the local shops that sell the finished product. Thanks for the advice!

I suggest you try a local leather worker and see if s/he will sell you what you need.

I don't know if the desired thickness would be available, but I occasionally see purses, briefcases, suit bags, etc (I've even seen some women's knee-high boots) at local Goodwill and Salvation Army stores that I've thought could be made into a sporran
Some may say the glass is half full,
Some may say it's half empty...

I bought a cheap brief case one time for about $15 and used the very supple leather for a project.
Think outside the box, i.e., other possibilities than the standard leather suppliers who tend to be quite pricey.

leather source
the leather guy of MN
He sells on e-bay and has both a web site and a store.

I have bought both small and large pieces from them. Give them a try.

Another possibility is a fabric shop. Often they pick up small lots of leather for jackets, skirts, slacks and the like and just dump them in bins for you to sort through. You don't say wjere in Utah you are, but there must be something like that in, say, Salt Lake. In Vancouver there's one called Dress-Sew (or something similar) and there are at least two I know of in Edinburgh. The weight will be right for you, too. If that doesn't work, tell us how much you need. There may just be one of us with that much surplus
