My first DIY sporran

I admit, I like using the seam ripper that came with a sewing kit my wife's mom gave me for x-mas. So anyways, I was ripping the pocket off of an old pair of Lee jeans, and my son claimed the pocket for his kilt. (He's only for, but very convincing sometimes.) So I get the second pocket off, and use them to attempt my first DIY sporran, since he doesn't have one. (A previous attempt wound up making a pocket knife carrier, forgot about things getting smaller when sewing and stuff.)


I messed up the machine sewing for the back loop, but since he lacks belts anyways, I can deal with it later. Right now it hangs from a shoe lace that didn't quite fit my Doc's. (insert shoestring budget joke here)


The area for it to expand (is that gusseting?) was easily done since the pockets had some extra fabric hangoff once I removed them. (Which helped, since they were actually slightly different shapes, which makes sense, but was a surprise.) I stitched the two overlaps together, so it still has a pocket shape, but can expand nicely.


Really, such a sporran is too small for me (by dimensions) and a bit too large for my son, but it should last him for a while (at least until he gets a more fitting sporran, blue jeans over Black Watch seems almost too contrasty.)

Now, I might just try again if I find that old pair of black jeans that gave out and wound up in the dead pants pile. (dunno why I never throw them away, even after a few years, my wife wonders too. But now I have fabric...)

(The only part that was machine sewn was the loop on the back, everything else seemed like I needed too fine control to 'accidentally' mess up again, like i did with the back loop. Of course, I can still make a adapter for the back to make it work, but it's the main flaw I have with it anyways. The 'wave' on the front it the original from the pants.)
