Yes, I was baffled by this tradition when I moved to Maryland from Pennsylvania. We just happened to be grocery shopping the first time the news called for snow. There was literally no milk, bread, or toilet paper left when we got there in the evening. We actually asked a clerk, who looked at us as if we had three eyes, then explained that it was going to snow.

I remember this phenomenon when I lived in PA. I wish I could head to a grocery store right now to see what kind of mad rush there is. We're supposed to get up to 6" here. I haven't seen anything but a trace in the 4+ years I've been here.

I guess I should have specified NW Pennsylvania. I used to live in a town that got an average of 120" a year. I suppose in Philadelphia they panic and make a run on all the grocery stores too.
