    Ok that makes sense.

I was confused by the redundancy of the over apron pleat and the 3" front facing part of the first pleat.

I am still not sure I did everything 100% correct but I am sure that it is close enough to work with.

My next step is going to be to sew down the top of the pleats along where they waist band is going to be. My thinking is If i get the pleated section done I can work with the leftover parts of the over and under apron to get the fit (length) just right. Then I can go back over the entire length of the top (waist band edge) to secure the frayed edge. Then sew on the waist band.

This is going to be a kind of "Thinking out loud" type of post. I have never seen a kilt in person let alone been able to put on on. And before the week of my first post I had never seen a non traditional kilt at all. So there has been lots of speculation on my part as to how this is going to work. So here is what I think I know.

1 So this X-kilt I have made is going to start with an under apron. The under apron will go from my left leg across my front and end somewhere on my right leg. From there the pleats start, covering my right side, my back side , and my left side. From there the over apron starts, goes over the under apron, and ends at the first pleat on my right side.

2 The over apron and pleats will have belt loops and a belt will keep them under control. The under apron will need to be secured to the over apron along its length (or maybe just at the beginning and end) to keep it from falling.

3 I don't think this was mentioned in the guide but I'm thinking that the big OA pleat ca be adjusted to fold back under the pleats as much as necessary to line up with the UA. Having this folded back will allow me to sew the Velcro to it there by hiding the stitching holding the Velcro in place. Then the OA pleat is held in place by the the sewing of the waist band.

I think that's enough for tonight. I numbered the paragraphs so it will be easier to comment on them specifically.

    1. Yup

    2. Yup (just beginning and end need to be secured)

    3. The XKilt manual (as is) has you sew the Velcro onto a rectangle of fabric -- check the size of that scrap, as it's too small in current edition. The RH edge of that Velcro/fabric assembly is then caught up in the overapron edge finish. It overlays the underpleat, and the top edge is caught into the waistband seam. That "overlays the underpleat" is the other error in current edition of manual, new version in the works will fix that.

So the scrap of fabric that holds the Velcro is, in turn, affixed to kilt along two sides. Personally, I make it long enough so it can be held on three sides (the third side being the underapron LH stitching).

Sounds as if you have it pretty much figured out!

Whatever works: I held off dealing with the Velcro until just before the waistband.

it sounds like in SMP's layout, the deep pleat (OA pleat) can accomodate a Velcro patch sewn directly to it. That's what I did, and sewed the right-hand patch to the apron facing---the folded over right-hand edge of the "over" apron.

Then I placed the other (under-apron) side of the Velcro to match, tacked down the deep pleat and other bits, and did the waistband.

Sounds as if you have it pretty much figured out!
    Yup. Well done SMP.

This shows the patch attached to the deep pleat:

I have finished all the sewing on the kilt proper. The only thing left to do is add belt loops. I am very surprise how well it fits. Now I just need to make a sporran.

This project was overall much easier than I originally thought. The only bad thing is now I want a real kilt!
