My hard and fast rule for the location of the Kilt pin? Typically in a box or bag but not on a kilt.
I do have a small collection of kilt pins including a 150 year old silver "diaper pin" but I just don't make a general habit of wearing them. I reserve them for special occasions. Inserting kilt pins is quite tricky and I've unfortunately seem too many kilts with holes that at first glance look like moth bites. Leaving them installed too is not a good idea as it can wear down the fibres.. and other those made of stainless steel--- especially silver and gold--- can stain through oxidation.
