Highlanders v. Lowlanders

My Scottish heritage most likely traces back to lowlanders -- the name is Miller. I was very surprised to find so many Scottish Millers, but if you think about it, it was a very universal trade.

Did lowlanders ever wear the kilt or was this something found only among the Highlanders?

Historically Lowlanders did not wear the kilt, nowadays however it seems to be fair game.

This could be an interesting thread! Originally the kilt was, and I would say still is, Highland Scots attire. Only in the last say 150(ish) years have the lowlanders copied us.

This could be interesting. Yes, the kilt was mostly a highland garment, but as Jock stated it has moved into the lowland wardrobe. Who was most responsible for the kilt moving to the lowlands? Was it Queen Victoria, Sir Walter Scott, or was it highlanders who had moved to the lowlands due to the clearances?

The people from the highland clearances and potato famine that went southwards went mainly to the cities. The lowlands were also having the own version of the clearances and famine too. So yes, Queen Victoria, Sir Walter Scott, clever marketing by the weavers, a tourist trade that was in its infancy were, in the main, all responsible for the kilt going south.

http://www.nationaltrustnames.org.uk/default.aspx shows Scots Millers most heavily in Perthshire and Caithness--- Highlands---though there are quite a few in the lowlands and Borders, as well as in England.

Oh yes absolutely,although, I understand in the early days the Burberry cap was worn back to front.
