If you have a belly a kilt at "jeans waist" will cause the front hem of the kilt to be lower than the rear. This is because the belly pushes down on the kilt waist in the front but the back of kilt stays where it belongs. This does not look right from the side. Some of the kilt makers that specialize in the "jean waist" fit will compensate for this by making the rear longer than the front if asked. A traditional fit goes around the widest part of the belly so the hem is even all the way around.
