I do think that it would work best with darker tartans. If the tartans were brightly colored, there would be too much pattern. Both of the tartans in Jamie's combination are fairly dark. If the red were brighter, it might not work.
I just don't care too much for patterns on patterns, but the right combination can look okay.

Looks good, Jamie! I agree with dave that this works particularly well because both tartans are relatively monochromatic.

Every gentleman should know how to tie a bow tie, or else he should have an adoring mate who will do it for him.

What I would REALLY like to know is if the US and Canadian governments are berating us about sooo many people being overweight and plus sized, where are the "kingsized" bargains at the thrift stores?!? I can only find clothes that were built for emaciated, little, underfed twerps who .........UMMM, did I just say that out loud?!?
Er, looks very nice Jamie. I wish I had your luck.

I think it works on a colors level, due to the subdued nature of the tartans. Two busy tartans wouldn't work as well, imo

No, I just do not care for them, I enjoy other styles of ties just not the bow tie, never have. There is something about them that is off about them for me. Of course when the revolution comes I doubt even the wild machinations of Panache will be able to break through my ring of girls
