I guess if you are planning to cut the cake with the dirk, it might work. Not sure if it is appropriate if it has no purpose. The sgian dubh is in the sock because of tradition that you take it out of your arm pit and put it inn the sock in your freind's house. Don't think the dirk was ever hidden and therefore outlawed in some parts of the history of Scotland. In fact, I'm not sure where I would wear a dirk unless I was a piper, piping in the wedding.
