    First, welcome.

Second, I'd suggest skipping the costume party and go straight for the orchestra concert. Why set yourself up for having your friends ask you why you are still in costume the next time they see you in a kilt? Go as a pirate or head of lettuce instead.

Third, it's a good thing to work on self-improvement projects. I wouldn't necessarily attach them the idea that they have to be done before you can put on a kilt. A belly of flab or a slab, guys who are built like construction workers don't get picked on much (except possibly by other construction workers, who will then tell you in private how much they admire you and wish that they could do the same).

You've obviously been thinking about this a lot. Rather than look for things to hide behind (a sgian dubh, your Irish name, bagpipes), why not just let your interest in your Celtic roots be the thing that shines through? In the end, you don't owe anyone an explanation. It should be enough to say you are wearing a kilt because you want to, and because you can if you choose.

    Regards,
    Rex.
At any moment you must be prepared to give up who you are today for who you could become tomorrow.

Here is the link, www.tartanday-wa.org. If you are interested please let me know and we can go together,(I live right across the street from the fairgrounds). I may be able to lend you a kilt to wear (depending on your size, I'm short and "robust",lol).

    Welcome from a Welshman!!!

I actually asked my fiancee what she thought about me wanting to wear a kilt for my wedding...She thought it would look great and sexy...My plan was to outdo her! She's now insisting that there's no underwear...Hmmmm!

    The kilt will transform you!

    Me too.
Wearing it is going to be somewhat traumatic for a while. Unfortunately, I'm a naturally timid person and my family has already told me that they think I'm crazy for wanting to wear a "skirt" (Although my mom grudgingly said that it wouldn't be QUITE as girly if I have a Sgian Dubh). I can imagine what my friends are going to say. I might get a dirk also; they all like knives. I live in kindof a hick town (which I normally enjoy).
The one thing a kilt doesn't look like is 'girly'.
BUT, I have a plan! I have some friends who throw a costume party from time to time. At a costume party, it's EXPECTED that people laugh at you hilariously and in a comic situation such as that, I don't mind being laughed at. Once that breaks the ice, I can try it for a more formal setting like the local orchestra concert. It helps that my name is Irish (Doyle), so I can claim genealogy interest even though I'm mostly German. Then I can try and incorporate it into more casual wear like hiking.
Why does one need a name or heritage to wear a kilt. It is a man's garment.
Before I start though, I want to shape up some things about myself; it will make me more comfortable. For Example: work on getting rid of my cursed timidity (which needs to be done anyway), work on losing a little flab and gaining a little muscle (people aren't nearly as likely to say I'm girly if I look like the construction worker that I am), and learn the bagpipes (LOVE THEM and I already play four other instruments). That last one along with my name will cover a couple of the standard "why are you wearing a kilt" questions.
That all sounds like a tall order. Best of luck.
You all probably aren't interested in all of that but that's my plan!

Welcome Preacher Man, from Hampton Roads, Virginia. You'll find plenty of good advice on breaking the ice on this site and plenty of facts and photos to rebut any any claim that a kilt is "girly". As Sir Colin Campbell said "a man in a kilt is a man and a half".
"O, why the deuce should I repine, and be an ill foreboder?
I'm twenty-three, and five feet nine, I'll go and be a sodger!
