EDIT: Just found the inverted pleat kilts on the site they are more to my liking. However, I still would prefer a utilikilt.

Well, it's just not for me. I have a "hillwalker" style kilt from several years ago that is a 5 yard tartan kilt with a pocket in it--that I never use. It seemed like a good idea at the time.

As for those styles that I think of as utilikilt styles . . .well, they just look too much like skirts and not enough like real kilts to me. (Let the stoning begin. ) I know lots of folks here were that style, and it doesn't offend me or anything, but it just doesn't seem to be a kilt to me. But then, neither do those tweed models that are not tartan.

I'll be quiet now and let the slings and arrows of outrage ensue. I'm pretty sure I stepped on a few toes, but that really was not my intent. I'm just a little to Jock Scot for all that.

c'mon, Jim! Come over to the dark side... No offense at all, Mate! I have traditional tartan kilts, and I am equally a fan of contemporary kilts, and have several UK's, an RKilt, an apocokilt, and love all. Each has it's place, and I view ALL as "kilts" (but we don't have to rehash THAT one again....)

My take on these

Positives: They do look sturdily constructed. Obviously trying to push the envelope without looking just like a UK or other established line.

Negatives: The web site needs more photos from different angles. It would be well-nigh impossible for a novice to see what an "inverted pleat" is, for instance. Apron shots are in short supply as well, and that is certainly an important detail.
A bit too "trendy" looking for me, but then again I'm old.
Looking at the pleats reminds me of why I'm glad that kiltmakers long ago developed the "sewn down to the fell" style for men's kilts. I think this is where the "skirt" comments are coming from.
I cannot find a clear statement of fabric content anywhere. It may be that I missed it, but it certainly isn't obvious.

I also note that X-Marks is not listed as a "featured link", so I guess our opinions won't really matter much.

My XMarks tartan kilt will be made by these folks- (really they are just the contemporary kilt making branch of Burnetts and Struth). It will be a very non-traditional design, with pockets and contrasting coloured edge stitching and a kilt pin patch that will drive conservative types berserk. Stay tuned.

Now that will be interesting, can't wait to see the pics.

My on complaint about these kilts it the pleats are WAY too wide, but it sounds like they are willing to alter that. I may have to think on it...
