Lots of great ideas here. I will add to the list that you might want to check out Wolverine boots. Yes, work boots not combat boots. However, they have one style called the Marquette. They only go slightly above the ankle, are available in black, look great with a kilt, are extremely comfortable, last a long time and are only $50-60 a pair. At least they were the last time I bought some they may have gone up a bit now. Their website says $97.00 but I bought them for around $55 plus tax at an outlet store.
