Many African-Americans wear kilts. You should consider joining the Maxwell clan society if there is one if you want to learn more about your tartan. Any person with a name on the sept list of a clan is entitled to wear the clan's tartan. There are also universal tartans like: Pride of Scotland, Black Stewart, Hunting Stewart, Royal Stewart, and Black Watch that anyone can wear regardless of surname.
