For an all too short period of time, I was on strength of the Second Battalion, The Royal Canadian Regiment. Of course, they are a "normal" infantry-of-the-line Battalion, but they were created in the '70's out of the personnel from a Guards regiment (whose exact name escapes me at the moment), and the First and Third Battalions of the Black Watch, all posted to Camp Gagetown. One afternoon, they disbanded all three of these units, and the next morning, they all fell in (with new berets and cap badges!) as the Second Battalion, The Royal Canadian Regiment. They kept many traditions of the Black Watch, even if they didn't parade in kilts anymore. In fact the Pipes and Drums band still exists with 2RCR, and they are currently the only Regular Force Pipes and Drums band in Canada. The band wears the Maple Leaf Tartan now, IIRC.

It's admittedly a stretch, but that's why I wear the BW tartan - my military connection. To my knowledge the BW Regiment doesn't mind people wearing the tartan, but they WILL take exception to unqualified people wearing a red hackle behind the cap badge.

It's like wearing a maroon t-shirt around soldiers - unless you're jump qualified (or wife or girlfriend of someone who is), you're asking for trouble.

Like quite a few members of this forum I have a military background and like the BW tartan so much, I recently ordered a Standard one from SWK. I wanted to get a Thrifty one for my son but they didn't have one in his size so I got him one in Gordon which, except for the yellow stripe is very similar. We haven't worn our nearly matching kilts yet but we will soon.
