Research Help Stewart in St. Croix
Greetings all,
I have a challenge for Tartan / Clan history experts. Does anyone know any history of members of STEWART on the Island of St. Croix, US Virgin Islands? This one island has had almost every nation's flag claiming this island starting with Spain, post Chris Columbus' "Good will tour." Then Dutch and England ( back and forth and at one point shared ownership.) France 1651. Then 1661 Malta under the Knights of Malta. 1665-1733 France once again purchased the island from knights of Malta.
In 1733, the French Government sold St. Croix to the Danish West India & Guinea Co. Danes made a clever move by allowing immigrants of other nationalities to move in. The English soon dominated the populations and English became the language spoken on the streets.
My Great/ Great/ Grand father was a Stewart. All I know is the Stewart of that line came to St. Croix and owned land (sugar plantation) the only link validating that was my Grandmother and her two late sisters each had a small parcel of land passed down.
If any one knows of any history of Stewarts in the Caribbean , please private message me. Thanks

the Caribbean Islands were part of, or a stop in, what was known as The Triangle Trade.
Slave were picked-up from Arab traders on the West Coast of Africa. The ships then went to the Caribbean islands or the Americas to trade slaves for Sugar, Rum, or Cotton. They then went to England to trade the new world goods for money to buy more slaves.
My wife's family were Welsh via Barbados. There are still members who carry the name there.
Many Scots were plantation owners, workers, and traders all over the British Empire. The Hudson's Bay Co., the East India Co. and many others were the transportation system of the clearances and many Scots, Welsh, and Irish went to seek their fortune in the Colonies.
The Virgin Islands are full of Scottish names on streets, buildings, ports and cities. Many families have Scottish names.
I remember the lead singer of a Regge band in St. Croix who was one of the largest men I have ever met. 6' 11". His Dreadlocks reached his knees. And his skin was so dark it almost reflected your face. His heritage was from Cameroon. His name is Ewan MacDougal.
The Stewarts were supporters of the Catholic rebellion and not welcomed in their own country after a while so it would make good sense to find them all over the rest of the world.
In the Tartan pattern books of Wilson's of Bannockburn there is a stock Tartan listed as no. 43. The number 43 is crossed out and the name "Kidd" written in. Mr. Kidd was a plantation owner in the West Indies and had ordered some of this Tartan cloth wishing to clothe all his slaves in matching fabric.
Later as the great build up for the 1822 Royal visit of Geo. IV to Scotland became frenzied Cluny MacPherson was given, or asked for, some of the same fabric as he was trying to identify his Clan Tartan. This is the MacPherson Tartan today.

Ironically, I just found this book not too long ago:

You might check with your local public library and see if they either have a copy or can interlibrary loan it for you. If any book might have information, it would be this one.
My wife lived on St. Croix for a time, and loved it.
Regards,
Todd
