Star Wars: Medieval romance, modern fantasy, or martial arts novel in space.
Star Trek: Mandeville's Travels, Gulliver's Travels*, or Horatio Hornblower novel in space.
Star Wars
Han Solo: It's the ship that made the Kessel Run in less than twelve parsecs.
Star Trek
Spock: I am not from the world you know at all. My home is a planet millions of light years away.
Both are science fiction. Both are fantasy. Neither is "hard" science fiction, whatever that may be. I like both, but must confess a slight preference for the faraway galaxy.
*At one point in the planning stages of Star Trek, Gene Roddenberry and his producer Herb Solow decided to name the series Gulliver's Travels and the main character Captain Gulliver. Fortunately they soon came to their senses, but the captain's log format remains as a relic of this particular brainstorming session.
