			Tartan tat shops

While taking some photos of Princes Street I took a few of these shops in a row of three together at the west end of Princes Street. I think you will understand why Edinburgh people are not too happy about the appearance of what should be the city's showcase street - "Pride of Scotland" shop, surely a contradiction if ever there was one -

Shop next door. This may be Romanes & Paterson if their original shop is re-opening. If it is please take careful note of the stock they are carrying. This was once a quality Edinburgh store -

and next door is this one which at one time was called "Morrison Kiltmakers" another once highly respected kiltmakers now heading swiftly downmarket under its new owners. This was not their shop, by the way.

And here they are again with a view along Princes Street towards Calton Hill.

It's not a very good image for Scotland, maybe when the trams are up and running things might improve.

most of scotlands highstreets are like that to a extent ,councils spend a fortune getting the roads and walkways perfect( and a good few bob on public transport) but then the shops fee`s go up too and you find more and more pound shops and bargain shops and the old traditional shops close down, i guess you just cant compete with the large shopping centres no matter the history of a town

Looks like Newbury Street in Boston. A sign of the times. They could be a little more discreet and use vacant windows for promotion of the celebrations, other businesses, etc.

Someone once told me that the way you can tell a town ar area is doing financially is look for the number of "Dollar" store (Dollar Tree, Dollar General, etc.). The more there are, the worst thing are.

It's troublesome, and we're seeing a fair amount of this here, too. Thanks for these pics, Phil, and the other thread with the pics of the tram construction... a city isn't just made up of its "postcard" shots and I appreciate these glimpses.
Just makes me wish more that I could get there this summer.
