At least in the US hanged would describe what happened to these folk.
When I first saw the thread title "Hung ancestors" an enntirely different topic came to mind that I am not sure would be historically provable.

That's exactly what popped into my mind when I saw the topic. Of course, I thought... that's why some of us prefer to wear something that doesn't cramp us. It's inherited after all...
