Definitely get Barb's book. Then try something using a fabric you like. Wool behaves differently than PolyViscose or 100% polyester, and they behave differently than Arcylic. Actually, wool is easier to work with than the synthetics! (much the same way leather is easier to work than naugahyde).
Just remember patience can be substituted for skill, and do not hesitate to rip out anything you feel is not done just right. My strongest caveat is: Don't set yourself a deadline for when it must be finished. That way lies disaster unless you are highly skilled in the work being done.
