Hello Steve

If you can beg steal or borrow a sat nav and charger it might save you some time and trouble, even though you would need to download the maps for Britain.

I am assuming that you do not have one of these devices already, or you would not be asking for a road atlas.

We have only recently acquired one, a 'TomTom' brand, to plug into the car, and although it is not always cooperative, in the situations where it works it will guide you through city centre one way systems and find car parks, a particular shop or hotel or the closest garage, or other place of interest. Once you have left the car you can switch to walking mode to tour the locality.

The one we have even indicates the track around a roundabout and which exit to take - which could be a useful reminder to go clockwise. It also warns you to keep left or right when a road is about to divide, usually before the signs can be read.

Although I can read maps and charts I have found that it is so reassuring to be able to put in the address or postcode of my destination and be guided from door to door.
