Just got some COTTON hose from Jas Townson & Son. They are shown as over the knee hose on this page:

The heavy weight are about the weight of medium wool hose. The regular are just a little heavier than men's dress socks. One size fits most actually works in this case. I wear size 14 shoes and have large muscular legs, and these are long enough and big enough to be able to fold over my garters just fine. MUCH cooler than wool, for Washington DC's humid summer. I received my order promptly and as ordered. Recommended.

Please tell us you did not order the "Where's Waldo" red and white striped ones at the top of the page! A photo of that might end up in the "Kilt Do's and Don'ts" Section, although it would get a good chuckle or twelve.

Ah, no, no striped kilt hose. My in-laws already think I'm a little off. That would convince them. The solid cottons a little further down.

Actually, some of the nicest hose I've seen worn with the kilt were on a young man at the Argyllshire Gathering in Oban a few years ago. They were light blue and yellow striped (horizontally) and looked very nice indeed with his Cameron hunting tartan.

That's interesting. I think the striped stockings here are vertically striped, though, and they also have clocked stockings in thinner material if I remember correctly.
I have a pair of their wool stockings, and they are a fairly loose or open weave; not good for thick legs, but are very very long.
