An old friend just messaged me and asked me to attend the Mrs. North Carolina pageant next month, where she is a contestant, as her guest. It is a formal event, her husband will be in a tux and her one caveat was that I must come in kilted black tie.

Let's see...gala evening, surrounded by beautiful women, and and I have to be kilted. Gosh, whatever shall I do?

Boring doesn't begin to cover it. It's bad enough to sit through one on TV where you can get up and distract yourself from time to time, but being captive at the actual event sounds like torture. Even worse: Being surrounded by people who are excited about the results and feel that the whole thing is somehow important.

I wonder whether this is a let's-be-honest-and-call-it-a 'beauty' pageant or some sort of 'scholarship' competition, as they like to call them nowadays?

Most of us like to watch these things because we find women attractive. Not a very intellectual reason, but there it is. I don't suppose it's very PC of me to point out that there might be some correlation between your comment being the only negative one and your list of memberships in your signature. Heterosexuals are just so shallow, aren't we? Or perhaps if it were MR North Carolina you might have a different viewpoint? Whatever floats your boat is no problem as far as I'm concerned.

The Mrs. Minnesota "pageant" is a hoot. Trophy wives of all shapes and sizes and plenty of proud husbands showing them off. Almost lie one of those Waiting for Guffman or Best of Show movies. I would go and have a little wine to fully enjoy the spectacle.
