Best course of action might simply be to say, "Well it's a good thing I ran into you. I'd better notify the weavers right away!"

The closest I've ever came To arguing about my tartan was at a works retirement do at a bowling club in Aberdeen, I was standing at the bar when one of the regulars an older gentleman came up and asked the usual "what's the tartan?" to which I answerd Cooper and he said it looked quite like the Boyd tartan. Over all we got on well and it was a nice evening with the gentleman reminding me to give mr Boyd his kilt back in the morning.

I know it's a scot, but what tartan?
Scott - with two t's.
Oh. I didn't know there was a difference.
Well, there is. The family started using two t's to make the distinction between being from Scotland or of the family.

I had a lovely lady in the Buchanan tent last week insist that she could find me the appropriate tartan from her big book. I had chosen my weather saffron for the day to avoid any misgivings about affiliations. She steered me toward Tara, I'm not sure of the reasoning exactly, based on my maternal grandmothers maiden name Breazeale(Brazil). It's a nice one and I may eventually go there since it has both Irish and Southern associations, but it's far down my list.

The Scott clan tartans are interesting and varied, John. For the KC games, Anita got some Ancient Green Scott yardage and a kilted skirt form Sportkilt because that's all the clan stuff she could find on such short notice. Beautiful tartan.

We had several people at the clan tent tell us that couldn't be a Scott tartan, because it should be red. Fortunately Anita had JPEG's of all the Scott tartans she could find, (at least 12) and disabused several of their assumptions.

We know just enough not to be telling people they're wrong about their stuff.

My answer to this one is to wear my XMTS tank a lot, and then say 'I'll be really surprised if you can name this one...' to anyone who reckons they're a tartan expert.
