If you make a great kilt from 10 yards of double width fabric you will scarcely be able to move under the weight.
If the fabric is the normal 54inches wide then you will require 4 to 5 yards of it for a great kilt - though that is still a lot of money.
I recommend that you do nothing precipitously, but look around for a while to see what is available - or what might turn up.
