It is close but I don't think it is MacIntosh.

The information held within The Scottish Register of Tartans for the "MacIntosh Ancient" tartan is shown below.

    STA ref: 966
    STWR ref: 966
    Designer: Not Specified
    Tartan date: Not Specified
Registration date: This tartan was recorded prior to the launch of The Scottish Register of Tartans.
    Category: Portrait/Artefact

Registration notes: The use of the word 'Ancient' describes the age of this tartan. The name 'MacKintosh' is usually spelled with a 'K'. In this instance the tartan sample (National Museums of Scotland) is labelled MacIntosh.

    Regards

    Chas

Sorry - posted too quickly. The Scottish Tartan Authority have two spellings - with and without a K.

The information held within The Scottish Register of Tartans for the "MacKintosh" tartan is shown below.

    STA ref: 521
    STWR ref: 521
    Designer: Wilsons of Bannockburn
    Tartan date: 01/01/1819
Registration date: This tartan was recorded prior to the launch of The Scottish Register of Tartans.
    Category: Clan/Family

Registration notes: Closest to Lord Lyon Recording in LCB1 dated 29th March 1951. Thread count halved here. D.C. Stewart wrote, ''This is one of the few ancient tartans too well authenticated to admit of doubt or question.'' The earliest publication is attributed to Logan but he may well have known of the sample, sealed with signature of the chief, which existed in the collection of the Highland Society of London, dating around 1815. The chief of the MacKintoshes is also chief of Clan Chattan. Logan wrote, ''The chief also wears a particular tartan of a very showy pattern, which has now been registered with Lord Lyon. See #5889 (original Scottish Tartans Authority reference) for anomaly. Sample in Scottish Tartans Authority Scarlett Collection.

    The Answer -
I looked it up in MacKay's Guide.
    It is MacDonald of Glencoe
(that would also explain why it's so uncommon)

    Thanks Tim,

It appears I made a mistake in referencing MacKay's guide.

    Cheers, ColMac
