Well! I fully support the right to kilt Bears. 
From my experience out here in the desert during the rainy part of the summer season, it is the part of the kilt above the hips that causes any heat discomfort. With a traditional, non-pillow-butt kilt this is partly from wearing the kilt over the shirt. There's not much you can do about that, but then putting a thick leather belt over that same area compounds the problem.
Other than wearing a jeans cut, contemporary with the shirt out, there's not too much you can do. I am guilty of wearing sandals with my canvas kilt and an open hawaiian shirt over a T-shirt, though.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…
