Jock, don't forget that there are other Scotmen in Scotland, and that your opinions are not necessarily those of the majority, if it where not for the likes of these clansmen, many if not all of Scotlands historic events would be forgotten.

..... and there are those that think;" lets move on, whilst remembering the past". With the greatest of respect Chris I don't think that we disagree by much. Our history should not be forgotten and I respect those that take the time to stand to and get out there in all weathers. What I and others feel uncomfortable about is the pantomime that seems to go with these events. Take the chap in the above picture with his Jacobite bonnet, his sword, his shoes, his tartan, none of which is period dress for the occasion they are celebrating. In fact, his attire has no relevance to the occassion at all! I think because of this sort of thing, there is a large "cringe factor" that does Scotland no favours whatsoever. Fine, turnout in the kilt and "modern" day attire, it is our national dress after all,but please please do not turn our history into inaccurate cheap theatre!

Redshank & Jock
I think you're both right and my place is somewhere in between. At the risk of bringing politics onto the board, I'd say keep your politics away from here as I know, having been censured in the past, that it's a tricky line to tread when bringing kilting matters into the fray.
My kilt wearing is a political statement on my part. How far I am up various political roads is for the streets and not these boards.
Two good posts, though, chaps!

All I know is what I witness. I've only been to Scotland only twice and for both occasions I went to a Highland games in which a few showed up in period dress, or a mix. They were Brits, not tourists.

I was not really talking about Highland games more like an in the street situation. But you are right! You never know who, or, what you are going to see at a Highland games these days!I also conceed that one should not make assumptions, even though we do!

Cockade or simply a statement?
Could I respectfully add my wee piece on this, there are in Scotland, still Scottish Monarchists - who have moved on, I wear a white cockade behind my clan badge, and indeed behind my kilt pin - as I do not often wear a hat.
I do not pretend to be a re enactor, I am a present day supporter of Royalty. If you have a look at the Royal Stuart Society web page, you can get all the details of the present day Monarchists' stance.
Some of we Monarchists' wear a facsimile of the cockade, because it is the recognized badge passed down thro' the years to where we are today. It is a statement, if worn in this way. Most re enactors I would think do not neccessarily agree with our stance. They wear the cockade as part of a 'uniform' indeed many of them are happy to turn out as 'Redcoats'.
I hope you can see what I mean on this pic of me taken this year.

A very smart picture there, sir. Are we not lucky to live in a part of the world where we are allowed to have opinions and points of view without fear or favour?
