Kilted
So ... after 21 years in this city I finally had my kilted Edmonton debut. In leather.
A fashion designer friend recently decided to leave the retail business; yesterday he closed his shop, permanantly, and held a 'wake' at a local pub. He already knew of my interest in kilts, having measured me for my Keltoi order, and his wife had ordered me to model one for them at first opportunity. That opportunity came sooner than initially expected.
The immediate and painful jonesing for that Keltoi kilt and the Thorfinn sporran on order led me to some interim solutions: I found a traditional three-tassled sealskin sporran (don't get me started on that issue!) on ebay, and 'inherited' a couple of Gary's casual kilts (thanks, Gary!), one leather and the other a warrior tartan Bear (repatriated to Canada!) that I am wearing as I type this note.
The black leather looked great with a plaid shirt my friend had once made for me, set off by that sporran, which was the only 'traditional' bit of this outfit. I don't yet have the proper hose and such, so I just wore thick black socks in my burgundy Docs. Sorry, no pics (I know, I know ...), but some fine, obviously positive reactions at the pub ... and indeed all down the crowded street in this pub-heavy part of town. One guy started to argue that I was wearing a skirt, not a kilt, but that swiftly turned into a friendly discussion of kilt history and design. Only one person asked to pet my sporran; no one asked even in jest what I was wearing underneath the kilt; those who know me likely feared a demonstration.
All in all, a fine evening.
