FC 16 oz. Crawford Modern

(Pic taken by the 8 year old after we had been throwing a football around in the yard...)
It's a very nice looking tartan. I was under the impression that they only had 16 oz. Crawford, but I could be wrong. I do prefer the 16 to the 13 oz.
And yes...that's a flat cap!!

That says it all, and then some! I wanted to see what the finished product looks like, and here it is. Now I definitely know this is what I want. I just have to see if they will custom make one for my son too!

The only thing I would point out is that they are acrylic, which is why I own none. I have bought other things, though, like pins, hose, and I'm looking at a sporran from them. Point it, I hate- hate!- acrylic. I find it to be very uncomfortable as it doesn't breathe at all, and can be very hot. It's not like wool, which insulates well when it's cold, but is very breathable when it's hot- acrylic is hot all the time! And it pills and snags like crazy. If those are things you can live with, then go for it- get one. Otherwise, just get their accessories. The service is excellent, and the quality is very good for the price.

Ok. Ok I got to admit it, my first kilt was from FC. One of their cleric/Clark Tartans for a wedding I did. I was impressed by the wieght of the kilt, and still am.
I don't wear it much for two reasons, one what Nighthawk said; it's a warm kilt; great for fall and winter but not so much for spring and summer. And two;I got smaller. When this all started about a year ago I was more substance than I am now; I took to heart the up sizing recommendations and bought a 48 when I should have bought a 46 or even a 44. My last kilt I had made and it fits like a Kilt!
Would I buy another? For the kind of kilt your looking for, yup. As I garner more insight and knowledge I can see there is a place for the FC's and the Barb T's. I have a couple of kilted weddings coming up and I may just see if I can make the thing fit!

Does look & feel of 16 oz compare to wool?
I own a Sport Kilt Works, which is great for the 100 degree weather that I usually seem to wear it in, as it is light. I would like to get something heavier, with the looks of an 8 yd. wool kilt, but without the $600 price. Does the Frugal Corner 16 oz kind of have the look and feel of the wool? Could you wear this with a Prince Charlie Jacket to a Ceilidhs and not look out of place with the wool kilts.
I've just recently gotten into the kilt wearing in the last 2 years. Working the Clan Buchanan Tent in N. California, I'm still aquiring gear related to clothing, plus Highland gear such as weapons and targes to interpret at the events.
Thanks

Like I said, the FC heavy kilt is just that, a heavy kilt. It out weighs my SWK's Gordon and Saffron by quite a bit. My Barrett and Struths 16 oz 4 yard box pleat would give it a run for the money but it is a 4 yard not a 8 yard knife pleat.
Nothing man made feels like real high quality wool, but the FC heavy weight is close in that it does not feel cheap or poorly made. I had a much cheaper kilt I ordered directly from Pakistan that I was less than impressed with. The FC heavy weight is a nice kilt for the price, depending upon the tartan you order I think you will be pleased with one.
All of the above refers only to the Heavy weight, I have no experiance with their lighter weight kilt.
ith:
I just check the B&S website and they have Bucannan in both weathered and modern in 16 oz.

If you want something heavy like wool without the price tag, then I would suggest Stillwater Kilts heavyweights. They actually are wool, and very soft wool at that. And they don't cost more than $130. www.stillwaterkilts.com I own several, and am very pleased. Only problem with Stillwater is that they have a very limited number if tartans on hand. However, you can make special orders (their customer service cannot be beaten!!) at no additional cost- at least in my experience. Also, USA Kilts make excellent polly-viscous kilts. They're only 11 oz material, but they hang and swing like a 13! They're more expensive, being that they're custom tailored, but man- they're so worth it! I think I paid $240 for my USAK poly- vis. http://www.usakilts.com/store/semitrad_kiltpage.php I have 2 of their kilts- one 5 yard wool , and the aforementioned poly-vis.

What he said for the wool. another option is the Burnett and Struths casual kilt sale which has been going on since January. Very nice kilt, very well made, 100% Scottish woolens, very affordable at $199 Canadian $157 US. They just added 50 new tartans, so the selection is better than ever. ith:

I have a wedding I'm working on, myself. Maybe I'll take advantage of that sale finally! I want a Loud MacLeod... because I'm just not obnoxious enough on my own!

I have one of their 13oz kilts. It is very lightweight, but that's a good thing in summer here.
However, I ordered custom length and it took twice as long to get here as they said for custom orders, plus although I think the length is OK, the waist is definitely the next size up from what I ordered! I didn't send it back, because I was fed up waiting for it, but if I lose even an inch around my waist I am in trouble. I don't normally wear a belt with a kilt, but I am now seriously thinking about getting one, for the true functional purpose of holding my kilt up.
To be fair, I ordered before they moved, knowing it would get here after the move. What I didn't realise is that the move involved a change of ownership as well. The new owners said they had no record that I ordered anything atall, but sent me a kilt without question. I just wish they had sent the waist size that I told them over the phone.
