That skirt is gross, means that skirt is very large, which is true of course, a kilt is a type of skirt and a skirt to fit a man tends to be larger than a woman's skirt.
Not to start discord here but "gross" over here means ugly, terrible, unsightly and among other things trashy. If you hear someone say that something is "gross" they are not talking large. I would have taken the remark as an insult, not a description of the amount of material. Not sure how I would have answered her, but it was an insult. Just my five cents worth (inflation and all that).

Remember that she was derogatory about what you were wearing, while you insulted her person.
If she'd been equally sharp witted, I'm sure she could have come up with something on the order of, "I may be fat, but you're rude and I can diet!"
It's not fair to enter into combat with an unarmed person.
Be well,
I used to have such an exchange with a friend's dad every time I saw him. Went something like
"Hey fattie" (or ugly, or baldie.)
"I might be, old man, but I can get lypo. Ain't no cure but death for old age, so I'm still better off than you"
He was a fun person, really. Owned an antique shop.

Be well,
It may be the case F-H.C.A.G., but truth be told, this type of young people are getting to be more and more common everywhere.
Rude, obnoxious and impertinent, and i'm sure a lot of it stems from never having been told to either shut up, or think before speaking.
I've exhausted my patience with these type of kids, and lately i'm openly talking back and pointing out their own 'issues'
I mean, what's the saying..."Why, then, do you look at the straw in your brother’s eye, but do not consider the rafter in your own eye?"
You know, its like the 'goth' kids laughing at us kilties while they wear those ridiculous 'vampire' clothes and make-up, etc.

Hello!
believe me, here in the US, when a young person categorizes something as 'gross', they mean ugly, nasty, disgusting, etc.
So with that said, this comment, specially coming from a young woman dressed like she came straight out of the 'dog the bounty hunter' TV show, was the more laughable and deserving of a talk-back.

OK--come backs like that should be prefaced with a warning prior to the posting: Caution...continued reading will leave to you snorting coffee through your nose onto your keyboard! LOL

Well to be honest I live in Scotland and to be honest no one I have ever known would take that skirt is gross to merely imply its large. It has long since entered into our language as the Americanised version.
I would probably have spent a good while pulling her appearance to pieces making sure she left in a flood of tears. That would make her watch her tongue, the next time she insults a stranger. I feel as some one able to intimidate and brow beat with the best of them its my duty to make morons like that watch there Ps and Qs.
The result of turning the other cheek is that next time, they may do the same to someone who has gone out for their first time in a kilt and are thus put off for life. Or they are emboldened to slag people off at will and they cause more harm with a more sensitive soul.
To the original poster good on you.

I'm the same way, snide remarks from kids that look like they dressed in a dark closet at Anne Rice's house deserve a response! Likewise, I'm annoyed by the 'gangsta' look, you know, big t-shirt - shorts below the ***, carrying the wallet and phone in hand, holding the shorts up with the other etc.. (especially on white kids) My wife hollers "Pull your pants up" at those clowns all the time!
