I've had exactly two negative comments on my kilt, ever.
One from a very large, very drunk woman, who asked me if I was wearing pantyhose. I promptly removed her from the bar I was working in, and sent her whole party on their way. She probably had no idea she was speaking to the bouncer.
The second was from a little girl who said that my skirt was silly. I got down to eye level with her, explained that this is the way men dress in Scotland, and that a few years ago, trousers would have been considered silly and unmanly dress.
Point being, if you're curious and naive, I respond one way. If you're loud and obnoxious, expect same, in spades. I'm no jerk, but I'm also not a doormat. Your pink paisley shirt makes me want to vomit.

Haha that reminds me of when my estranged/disowned/what have you sister-in-law came up to me at my youngest sister-in-law's funeral and said (very loud) "We're all just getting really fat aren't we?"
I was 8 months pregnant and pointed that out to her. (equally loud) *snort*

I would have given an ugly look to her and 10 minutes later come up with a snappy retort. I wish my mind worked that fast!

I believe the term is to "Never have a battle of wits with an unarmed person". In any case, she was ugly and you can change kilts.

The ugliest of women's beauty is offset by the likelihood and ability of their boyfriend to may you suffer for pointing it out to them.

Since I wasn't there I hesitate to posit any opinion, but I have spent the last thirty years of my professional life working with young people so I'll share this thought. Most young people are terribly provincial and unsophisticated and yet they are also very curious and malleable.
My only concern is that you may have cemented in this young person's mind an attitude about kilts and kilt wearers that will not likely ever change.

It matters not, her attitude towards kilts is the least of her issues, believe me.

A number of years ago a rather loud lass commented " Your skirt needs better color matching, it is just plain ugly." I was wearing my clan tank. My response to her was first, the pattern on my garment was the uniform of my clan and has serious historical importance. The second is the garment is a kilt, worn by men of Scotland and the diaspora here in the states. It took only five minutes of my time to explain kilts, tartan and a bit of clan history. The lass did apologize, and is now better educated for it.
The area in which you live has some influence on the kilted experience. I live in the City of Boston, which is one of the most culturally diverse cities in the U.S. There is no problem being kilted here. It does not even raise an eyebrow with the locals, as the only comments that I have gotten at all have come from tourists.
The O.P. evaluated the circumstances and reacted as he felt was appropriate for the culture of the area he is in. In his case, I would have done the same.

Beauty is only skin deep, but ugly goes right to the bone.
