And why shouldn't we get "wee bits of her Scottish accent" coming through?
It's not a song I know and don't think it could grow on me whoever sang it (not heard the Stones version) although she sings it beautifully.

The original Stones recording is from 1971; it wasn't good then and sounds rubbish now. 38 years later, Susan Boyle's version is excellent.
BUT
She has a big voice and should be singing big ballads - Last Night of the Proms kind of material. Not tuppenny, happenny songs that were B side material at best. Whoever is making these decisions for her is doing her no favours, regardless of how well she sings the song. She should be given good quality material that is known to the public. Songs that the public can relate to, not unknown songs (be honest, we all had to look 'Wild Horses' up).
With all the make-overs in the world, Susan is not a great looker - but she has a great voice. It should not be wasted.
Sorry for ranting, but the public is a fickle beast. They like her now, but could dislike her in a moment if she sings things that they don't like.
Regards
Chas

I have to disagree with you, I did know the song Wild Horses without a google search. Though it admittedly was originally recorded after the Stones' prime, Sticky Fingers sold 3,000,000 copies, I just looked it up. If you think the public is going to turn on her for singing a song like this, perhaps you should take a look at the number of views on you tube, and the comments from the public on you tube. I think it's safe to say that she has a hit on her hands, oh and the person behind her is Simon Cowell I think we can all agree he knows what he is doing when it comes to making a hit.

I don't always agree with Simon Cowell!
Susan entered the competition singing well-known stuff from the shows and demonstrated her command of both the quiet bits and the loud bits. That approach garnered her loads of votes. Had she gone on that stage to sing stuff like this I doubt she would have got through. I do see people singing songs that are not well-known and it doesn't often get them very far in a competition. In an album songs like this can get be sneaked in but I wouldn't want to see too many of them. There are many more far more deserving songs that could go into a debut album.
I can't see her singing Rule Britannia though Chas!

Maybe, maybe, maybe. Simon Cowell is known in this country as being a great supporter of Simon Cowell. He tends to make his money and then move on to the next project. Last year's stars are just that, last year's stars.
Susan Boyle could have a good release every year of a known song - I fear that you were one of the few who knew Wild Horses was on Sticky Fingers. Every second year, she could have an album release in which she could experiment with rarer songs or ethnic variation.
She, unfortunately does not have either great looks nor a sparkling personality. She does on the other hand have a fantastic singing voice, which easily makes up for it.
It is not my belief, based on previous winners, that Simon is not in this for the long haul. I only hope that she is not a casualty of his ego.

Unless she is given a chance, we'll never know.

Chas

I realize that Mr. Cowell is his own biggest fan, but really can you fault him for his success? I think not, he most probably will be gone after this effort from Ms. Boyle, however from all the reports I've seen he is the one producing her first album. As the Rolling Stones Sticky Fingers sold 3 million copies I hardly think I'm the only one that new about the song Wild Horses. Again I'll simply say take a look at the comments on you tube, I'm really not the only one that new about that song, that much is clear.

I hadn't even heard of Sticky Fingers either!
Chas - the Last Night material is pretty operatic as far as soloists go - they have never, as far as I am aware, invited Elaine Page (whom Susan stated she would like to be like) to do the last night either.
They sometimes do a musical during the season though - Susan would be great at that I'm certain.

It will be interesting to see if she will have lasting power. She did get through perhaps on the sympathy vote and does have learning difficulties. She was unable to keep up the live shows after the competition and just wonder how she will cope with the publicity which will ensue on the release of her debut album. Oh and by the way American Idol has spawned success for quite a few people Chas still enjoying success such as award winning Carrie Underwood, Kellie Pickler, Daughtry, Bucky Covington, Katherine McFee and others whose names escape me right now.

Wild Horses as a single made it to # 28 on the US charts. It has been covered by Neil Young, Sheryl Crow, Elvis Costello, Leon Russell, Dave Matthews, and many others. Rolling Stone magazine has it in their 500 best rock songs of all time. Hardly a song that was pulled out of a dusty rubbish bin.
Over the decades some musicians have excelled on the live stage and others in the studio. I think that Ms. Boyle will be in the later category.
I wish Susan Boyle all the best, she has a great voice and thoughtful phrasing. I for one will be purchasing her album.

OK, I'd like to retract a statement I made in a previous post.
I just watched Susan Boyle on America's Got Talent. (Watched the whole darned thing just to watch her.) She sang Wild Horses.
I would love to hear her live in concert!
