Just remember to tread lightly! They can make things way more difficult for you, than you for them. More sutiable compromises might be better than organized demands...know what I mean!
Good luck, hope things work out for the best!

Certainly wishing you good thoughts...what an awful, ugly, even bizarre situation.
Congratulations, you're not pregnant? Somehow, that's just not enough.

I'm very sorry to hear this. We'll be keeping you in our thoughts.
I do have a queston though...
From what I've read here on XMarks it really does not seem that your adopted country treats you very well. It's expensive, people are rude (I don't know that I've ever met a rude Japanese person here in the States but I guess they have to be somewhere) and now your work treats you like crap.
Why not just up-sticks and go home to Canada? My partner is Canadian and we hope to settle on the eastern shore of Lake Ontario one day.

Good luck with union activities. I understand the japanese moved some of their car production to the USA so as to not pay their unions much

I also work in education, and we have all been nervous about our jobs. You and your co-workers are in my prayers.

I'm sorry to hear about this news. This economy (throughout the whole world) isn't a good time to lose a job. I hope you and your wife get another job.
