An outfit check

My concern is BBQ + Beer + kilt, I hope the kilt you wear can be easily cleaned, better safe than sorry.

As for the red shirt, is the shirt of a level of brightness that it over powers the kilt? This from a person who's wife will not let him out of the house with out prior clothes approval.

I kind of have the same feeling about the shirt, but can't articulate why any better than anybody else... and I don't think it's bad, really. It might actually help the shirt to have red flashes, although I'm not heavily invested in the need to "match-up" all the time, in this case, it could help. I agree with you about the sporran strap, it will look better and you'll be able to get the sporran up a bit... looks a tad low to me. Enjoy the evening!!

I think that it might just be the brightness of the red in that shirt. Otherwise I say you look great in that pic.

That sort of looks like the way I would wear a kilt to a casual event.

The reason the shirt looks off to people is probably because the eye is looking for something that reads more towards crimson owing to the way that red stripe is buried in that blue-green undercheck, or when they think of red, they are thinking of Venetian- or fire engine red, rather than the cerise red that is coming off in your shirt. This could be the effect of the camera or the rendering of the images on our computers, but my experience is that most photography alters the light we see with our own eyes to a degree.

Trust your own eye when putting together your ensemble, and make no apologies.

Oh, and think about yellow flashes.

Hey Jordan, I had a long reply written up about color, balance, style, and other stuff, and realized what it really boils down to is this.

Are you wearing the kilt as a costume or a uniform, or as an article of clothing to replace your p@nts?

In other words, dress like you normally would, if going to a BBQ and a bar crawl, and then swap the p@nts for your kilt, keeping in mind that where you might normally wear a dark, drab or khaki pair of p@nts and a bright or bold shirt, the tartan provides enough color that you can tone down the shirt, and IIWY I would do exactly that unless the socks & flashes balanced it out...and even then, would you wear diced or tartan hose (both to my eye on the more formal side) to a bar? Maybe you and your buddies do dress up for a pub crawl, if so, you're on the right track...but like I said, I think you're better off simply swapping p@nts for a kilt, as opposed to trying to make an outfit around the kilt, and see how it looks to you.

Other than the red shirt, everything else works...if your buddies are all gonna be wearing black or white t-shirts, hoodies, sports jerseys etc. with their jeans, consider dressing similarly (ie "appropriate for the setting)...all will look just fine with the kilt, hose and dark flashes you're wearing. If you guys dress up to go out, swap the red shirt for a black long sleeve button-up, and roll the sleeves...it'll balance better, rolled it'll look more casual, and the button up will keep things sharper than a t-shirt or hoodie...

My only concern was the sporran chain and you have already addressed that.

I agree.. the shirt matches the flashes.. would be a good touch.... the only thing I would say.. is to "blouse" your shirt.. take the looseness out of it.. it looks a bit untidy.. maybe thats what people see.. the color is fine.. but again.. flashes.. would be a good touch..
Oh yeah, that one glove thing... worked.. the one hose thing.. doesn't...LOL Enjoy yourself, I bet it will be a fun time...

Wild Rover if i wasnt wearing my kilt i would probaly be wearing either my black shirt of a slightly off white one with no collar, Jeans and trainers. I dont think trainers work well with a shirt when kilted for some reason i think the kilt just smartens it up too much for trainers so ill be wearing my my outfit above with a black shirt and my shoes (which ive just finished polishing)
