Are you sure it is a regulation style doublet you wish to make, rather than a Prince Charlie coatee? The latter pretty much is a truncated tailcoat, whereas the former is not.

The back of a regulation doublet looks like this:

Thank you for the pictures of the back of both jackets. It looks like the tail are about the lenght of a "normal" suite jacket. Can you tell me the button size normally used on the PC and regulation. ith:

This vendor carries them in L, M, and S -- 3/4, 5/8, and 1/2 inch respectively.
I need to update it with some details about lining, but I did a shawl collar tuxedo conversion to kilt coatee (no fancy rear treatment) which you can see here.

Do you know if
The inner tails (smaller tails) are over laped by the outer (larger) tails.
or
They lay next to them.
On the Piper's doublet

Yes the larger flaps (or tashes ) do cover the two smaller flaps at the rear.

The regulation doublet is highly tailored - in the photo you can see that on the back there are four curved seams which end at the armscye, two each side.
If your original jacket is not shaped in that way it might be difficult to create it, though if the jacket has an armhole deeper than the doublet's then it could be an advantage to be adding that shaping.
It also looks as though there is a dart in the back of the sleeve cap.
Creating a hybrid might prove problematic, as the PC has a centre back seam and the doublet does not.
Personally I would examine the original tailcoat and go for a conversion to the one which is closest to its present construction.
