    Alan,

I had the same problem with a pair of hiking boots, I did what EagleJCS did as well as put a patch of duct tape at the bottom of the heal, and bingo no more eaten socks. Hiking socks can run almost as much as kilt hose so I was happy to find a solution.

Why Duct tape? Low co-efficient of friction.ith:

Good God, man! What kind of socks are you hiking in? I wear Smartwool's expedition socks, and they are only about $20 a pair.

Anyways, jot me down for another vote of trying that old surefire trick, duct tape. I've used it for this same purpose on some non-kilt footwear and it did the trick wonderfully. Plus you get to feel a little like MacGyver.

For this forum I buy cheap kilt hose, my hiking socks run $22-28 a pair. To me thats a lot. I try and not pay more than that for kilt socks!

Duct tape? Perhaps moleskin would work as well.

A long time ago a man with a Smokey Bear hat and booming voice demanded we wear thin cotton liner socks to prevent such problems.

Duct tape gets sticky/gooey/messy. I wouldn't use it except in a pinch.

Gaffer's tape is a much better product. It's way more expensive than duct tape, but it's handy stuff to have around!

I had that problem with a pair of low quarters (dress shoes for those not familiar with the Army's quaint way of naming equipment.) It turned out the offending shoe was a little bigger on my foot than the other shoe. A pair of liner socks and problem solved.
