I've tried this twice, once in a trad kilt and once in a contemporary, and both times security was a ROYAL PITA. It upset my son tremendously to see his Dad treated like a criminal. If I'd been wearing shorts and a snap beeped the metal detector, I'd have been given a cursory wand and sent away. In a kilt, when the buckles beeped, I was practically strip searched. They fondled the kilt so much, i felt like I needed a cigarette...never again.

I'm sorry to hear about your problems with TSA security. Kilted is the only way I fly. I've never tried a traditional kilt, I always wear a UK. I've never had any problems. The only times that I have ever been sent over to the extra security check section is when I've been wearing pants. Really strange to find the opposite for you. I would say try it again, maybe you were just catching the off day.

I have not had (yet) kilted experiences with Airport Security in the USA but have never had major problems in European airports.
I never wear a kilt pin - that goes in my hold luggage.

It depends on the airport and security team.
I have flown in my UK before and I never had hassles until 2 weeks ago.
Many of you already know that I took a trip to Nova Scotia and it happened on the way there.
It was early in the morning when I arrived at the airport. I never had issue with overweight luggage before, and it will be the first time. My suitcase was 5 pound over the limit of 50lbs and I was asked to relocate a few things to my carry on bag. I opened the suitcase and I decided to take out my can of espresso, stove top espresso maker and my UK Workman with a heavy leather belt. They weighted it again and it was just under 50lbs. I thought that it was good to go as I tucked those items to my bag.
After breakfast with my lovely girlfriend, I decided to change to my kilt. It was pretty heavy and I thought that it would be nice to travel to Nova Scotia in a kilt. I forgot that the security is getting read for the 2010 Winter Olympic and they have cranked up the measure. For the next 10 minutes, I had one hell of a ride and needed to answer so many silly questions.
Needless to say, my Workman caused the metal detector to go off. I knew that I had nothing to hide, but the security didn't know that. I stood there with my arms open and the wand went off as it was positioned next to a button. The officer needed to feel that area to see he could find something.
Then the wand was near the front buttons, the officer looked at me with a werid expression. Fortunately, they didn't try to pet down that area...... After a few minutes of modeling every feature of the workman, I was let go, but only to face another team of officer.
The x-ray picture of my bag also caused security concern. Apparently, the attending officers had no idea what a espresso maker was. She opened the bag and searched for it. When she found it, she asked what the device it. I was just stunned. Of course, I couldn't crack any joke. They also needed to open it. I had to explain to her how that thing work and why I am carrying it with me....
It wasn't a particular good experience for me, but I suppose that they are trying to keep our world safe from terrorist!!

Why fly in one anyway in this security time, I love getting stuck behind some fool that does not understand the security requirements these days and jams up the lines.

I always show up way early, because I always get the Inquisition. I know the rules, and you'd better believe I follow them. I think the problem is that since I don't look precisely middle-of-the-road I'm gonna get checked. See avatar for a good indication of how I look.
I've been told by security trainers that one of two things is going on: either I look like the kind of crazed biker people see in movies, or I'm suspect because I'm following the rules. Either one sets off the radar.
I once got the wand in a tender spot, which made me jump, which caused the wand to beep. I had to restrain myself from making a joke, but a guy in the line yelled, "Whoa yeah! Blue steel, Baby!" Even the security guys had a laugh over that one.

I really find the time consuming hassel the problem. I don't want you to think I don't want security for the good of us all. This is just me not wanting to deal with THEIR insecurities of searching me. I could care less about the actual search since I am far from being a modest person. Go for it and while you're at it - let's make this worth my while! So I have to stand there while they explain that they will only touch me with the back of their hand? Rediculous - the entire time thoughts going through my mind of - "just do your job, get it over with" while biting my tongue. For me I don't think wearing my kilt through the airport is worth the security once over. If I wouldn't have been detained from my flight I would have just taken it off. I even told them - bring me to a private room and I'll take it off! That would have solved everything immediately! Just affirms my belief - we all need to fly naked. Just watch...the shoes went first...give it time...hahahha
Have no fears - I refuse to give up wearing my kilt - I'll just put it on when I get where I'm going.

I will say that flying kilted is a whole degree of comfort different.
What do the security people do to women who are wearing tartan skirts?
