Makes me wish I worked in an office again.
I'd never get away with wearing a kilt in the warehouse, and I don't know that I'd want to risk damage to the kilt.

So the question was asked regarding what I do for work. My primary 'gig', particularly in the busy spring/summer months, is being a professional musician. I'm a bassist/composer working for 4 different bands/projects, and I also do freelance and studio work as well. As we all know, that doesn't always have the most predictable regular schedule, so I also maintain a day job to some degree in addition to it all. Up until the economy bit me over the course of the past year I worked as a graphic artist for a Real Estate magazine (was there for almost 3 years). I got laid off from that job in December of '08 after the market tanked. I got a great new design job with a design firm in town in January, but their advertiser base started drying up as well through the middle of the year and they had to let one of their artists go... that was me! SO, I currently work as a music seller for Barnes & Noble Booksellers for my day job. I never thought I'd ever go back to retail, but here I am. I actually worked at B&N when I was in college several years back, and some of the same folks I worked with then are still at the store I work at now. It's not my most desired job, but it's work... which is hard to find in these times, especially where I live. I work in the music department, so I get to put my music experience and knowledge to work, which makes it enjoyable. So, I was even more surprised when I got the big 'OK' to wear my kilt to work. This is a pretty diverse and accepting town with a lot of Scot/Irish culture and heritage, so people tend to really dig it. Who knows... maybe I'll sell more stuff because I'm the 'guy in the kilt'.

Well Met Bryan! I too am in retail. I manage a department for a Major Department store.
Last year, I sponsored an international luncheon for our employees. We encouraged all of our associates to bring in dishes from their homelands and ancestral backgrounds. I also got the okay from upper management to allow the associates to com in their national dress. (I do not use the term costume in this context for good reason.) We have associates from 18 differenc countries. Even more with varied ancestry.
I came kilted and we had members in dress from India, Pakistan, Finland, and Texas. (Yes Texas... He's a little odd.) ;)
It was a success and the associates had a blast. We made it a celebration of the diversity that is represented within our store. Customers had fun as well and it was a chance to educate many about my Scottish heritage.
You might want to suggest this idea for spring. It really was fun. I am working on the next one for Feb. We are going to make it even more educational next year. PM me if you want some ideas of have questions.
GOO ON B&N for letting you Kilt up. Rock it!!
SLAINT!!

I know how that goes, after getting laid off I'm now working at Starbuck's but they are at least cool with me wearing my solid black kilt. I'm going to work on getting approval for some of my other kilts. As with you response has been very positive. I've been able to educate a lot of people about kilts since I started wearing it to work.
