Sad to say that my son (who just turned 21 this past weekend) has been a total kill-joy (kilt-joy?) when it comes to the kilt. I've even offered to get him one but he is just too cool to even consider it. Even offered to get him the Univ. of Chicago tartan...still no dice.
Thus, your son is to be commended for having the walnuts to don the plaid and sally forth into the world. Hope he demands his own after this.
There is a young man in my daughter's high school that has shown up in his kilt on the odd day, though. My daughter says that he has some kind of mp3 playback device and often blasts bagpipe music as he goes back and forth during class changes. Nadia is always taking the Celtic Croft and Celtic Corner Store catalogues that I receive in the mail to school to give to the young fella.
So there's hope...and it sounds like your boy is part of it. Good!
