Of the five Argyll jackets I have, only two have matching waistcoats. I have to admit I quite like the look of the two items worn together, but I do not care for the 'constriction' of the waistcoat and so I seldom wear one. Of course, it all depends upon the formality of the day or event - to my mind the wearing of a waistcoat makes the outfit slightly more formal than wearing the jacket on its own.

Personally, I prefer the more relaxed look of the jacket on its own.
With regard to the use of the buttons: I never button-up my Argylls, Balmorals or Crail, and in all the years I was a suited businessman, the only jacket I think I ever buttoned was when it was in the double-breasted style.
