I know how you feel. I wear suits most of the time and I have a certain vintage 1920's/1930's look to me (I wear my kilt, but not all of the time yet). Often times younger people will say, "Wow you're pimp," or some remark such as that. I'm not a pimp and frankly I resent the connotation of the remark, but over time I've come to live with it. Because of the way I dress, I'm prone to get remarks from "ignorant" people. They don't really know any better and would rather make an assumption (and use poor language skills) when complimenting a person's wardrobe. My suggestion would be to just accept the remarks as a complement (which most often they are, they aren't intended to make fun or imply something rediculous) and ignore the fact that often times people aren't as educated as we'd like for them to be.

And hey, if the actual goths are giving you a thumbs up, then they like what you're wearing... it's a complement.

I wasn't frightened until I realized they took Rome... that puts a whole new perspective on things.

Did they look anything like this?

I guess they could have said "You're looking L'il Abner!"

    Cool I'm Goth too?

Wow, the thread-start just about described me -- Seattle, shaved head, earrings, I wear black plenty but not predominantly ... however folk tend to think that I'm military over other assumptions (probably had to do w/ my posture and not shuffling about).

Uhm, trade the black-uk for a Black-Watch? Band shirt is a good idea ... of course, just as long as its not a goth band, but that doesn't sound to be an issue -- metal could work, Celtic-punk could work as well ... whatever works for ya. I don't know what to tell you to change -- because its not my place -- but I can tell you I've changed my attitude ... Forget'Em, I don't care what whoever-they-are think, I can't do anything about it. Step out, be you, and put your best self forward.

But consider this -- sure "they" are saying you look goth, but it could be worse ... they're not saying you look emo.
(them might be fightin' words *wink*)

When I was in Portland a few years ago, I got a thumbs up from a Goth too. I was wearing my box pleat Brodie Hunting kilt, a button-down collar shirt, traditional hose with tied flashes, sporran, belt and brown dress shoes.

My guess is that approval from a Goth is them recognizing what they perceive as another non-conformist, and the label "Goth" from others is perhaps misapplied.
