I have tartan flashes, but would NEVER wear them with argyll hose - just solid.

They definitely would not look good with Argyle hose!

    Is that a general point?

I think a tartan kilt, tartan waistcoat, tartan flashes with tartan (Argyll) hose can look good together.

A tartan doublet would look great with the tartan kilt and argyle or tartan hose: same tartan. I don't know that it would always work with a doublet and solid color hose... and thinking about it the solid color flashes would probably be best with argyle hose.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

    Rules

So,................ how many Xmarkers DOES it take to say; "There are no rules, just wear what you like?"

This thread reminds me about this style of wearing flashes that I saw this past summer at some local Games. What do people think, will it catch on?

Ted, you can buy grosgrain ribbon and elastic at almost any sewing center, and if you add a bit of velcro, you've got what you want on the cheap. That's especially true if you onlo allow a very small portion of the flash to show beneath the hose fold over.

I've been scouting around for some wool "ribbon" or whatever you call it from which to make some garters. I have a red pair that I wear a lot and would like to make some more; the ribbon flashes I reserve for dressier occassions.

I think that would be the case for most tartans - but obviously they differ.
I wear tartan flashes often with my Argyll-cuffed hose. I would not wear them with my diced hose though.

Woollen twill tape is what you're looking for.
