    Yikes!

Were I in similar position, my reply would be "you're about six years too young to be asking me that question!"...and it's likely I would've choked on my beer.

Were she at least six years older, I have a whole bag of witty and/or sarcastic remarks ready and waiting .

Whew! Sounds like a dicey conversational opportunity that worked out fair. Seems funny though!
Oh, yeh, A bit young for the adult level answers. I likely would've replied, "I'm not allowed to answer that question."
Go, have fun, don't work at, make it fun! Kilt them, for they know not, what they wear. Where am I now?

Perhaps a better response to her question might have been, "what do you plan on doing with this information?"

I agree, and I thank you for that suggestion. It might even have gotten a more informative answer than "I dunno" because it would not require her to understand the word "appropriate".

Now that I've had a few days to ponder the situation I'm leaning toward the opinion that the incident was not at all spontaneous but was set up by her father. He is the sort of person who greatly enjoys shaking people out of their normal humdrum intellectual and emotional ruts and getting them to improvise for a change. He has developed skill at doing that without causing, or even threatening, any harm more severe than a moment's anxiety. He and I have had several fascinating (to me) conversations about cultural influences on people's behavior.

If he did set this up I have to admire his skill and consider it a compliment to have been selected as a participant. He must have been confident that I would neither be offended nor offer any offense to his daughter.

Small children, I usually answer "What's under your kilt?" with "Shoes". And don't allow it to go further than that. Hint here: distraction can be you friend!

For anyone over 18, I look at it this way: they're an adult, and should be able to handle whatever consequences might arise (pardon the pun) of asking an inappropriate question. Here, having no modesty is a handy thing...
