I think I understand what you mean about undoing the pleat to make the front apron wider. It doesn't look like that would work out too well because of the button hole for the strap, and a few other reasons.
I have the same tartan Stillwater by the way.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…
