www.myowntuxedo.com has lots of tailcoats for very reasonable prices. The neat thing is they have the BIG sizes that are so hard to find in thrift shops. Also, you just buy the coat, not the pants, which is an additional benefit. They are very easy to work with. I've purchased several coats from them and have been very happy with all of them. Here is a photo of a "mock Montrose" conversion from one of their mandarin collar coats.

...and I was just wondering in another thread whether anybody had done any kind of doublet conversion from a mandarin collar jacket...that is fantastic!

vmac, thanks for the great link. I have been needing more formal attire. I will certainly check the site out more.
I will also consider doing a conversion sometime in the future. It definitely seems like a great money saving alternative!
By the way, great photo!

isn't it wonderful what you can do with some velcro and the guts to cut into a perfectly good garment?

Buy it. Cut the bloddy tails off and add silver buttons, or not.

I got that it costs 29 dollars - for a whole suit.
If the jacket fits you - something your size could be a bit ambiguous, but I assume it fits - why is it still in the shop?
If you go back and it is gone - you'll be kicking yourself then.
Grab these things whilst you can - think get, chop, stitch, wear - and I believe the last instruction is kvell

Gosh, those tailcoats look quite good as they are. I'm a bit tempted, but I must wonder where I'd wear it. I'll add this question again, since it has been answered. Is it acceptable to wear the Argyle jacket on informal occasions (ie: as an alternative to a sports coat)?
I edited that out earlier because I thought I'd be told to look at Panache's visual guide to formality in Highland attire, which I have now done. Thanks.

The observation has been made that the Argyle can pull double duty as semi and formal. Add the vest and a winged collar shirt and bow tie and it can be formal...just a dress shirt and a regular necktie and it's semi...
