I'd get navy, dark gray, lovat green to start. Think about some tartan/argyle hose for special occasions. Look at the shirts you like to wear with the kilt and get complementary colors in the socks.

I wear cream-colored hose (and blue flashes) with my Shaw tartan because I could only afford one pair when I bought the kilt, and cream seemed like a good multi-occasion color. However, the easiest way to pick an actual color is to determine the dominant colors of the tartan. In our case, the blue and green are dominant, so either would be a good choice. I'm about to have a pair of blue, and will probably find some red flashes to go with them.

I like the opposite approach: pick the least-represented color in the tartan. In Shaw, that's red, and then you could wear flashes in one of the dominant colors. If you wanted tartan hose, I'd think red and green with navy stripes would look really nice.

That one is hard to beat. Add red flashes and you're there.

Thanks everyone! The pair Redshank posted are pretty spot on. I already have black. I might also try navy, and green.
I'm awfully proud of my new Shaw Kilt! Its in honor of my great grandfather Augustus Shaw. He was a warden in Indianapolis by way of Scotland. I'm also named for him (middle name), and my great great uncle John Augustus Maxwell.
