I wore a kilt from about four or five until I was in my teens when it became too expensive for my parents. I remember my first kilts having a "bodice" as I did not have a waist for it to ret on. Since my divorce I found to my astonishment I had some cash so I purchased 2 kilts and most of the accessories. I am now 62

I was 40 when I first wore a kilt. My employers organised a charity fundraiser, selling Scottish passports to people as they arrived at the border from England. The passports gave discounts in shops and leisure centres. I was asked to wear a kilt while on this duty and I bought a Black Watch kilt from a thrift shop. It was a poor fit, but the concept of wearing a kilt was comfortable and my wife had been wanting me to get a kilt for years as most of the other men wore kilts to Scottish Country Dancing. So I donated the original kilt back to the thrift shop and ordered a new made to measure kilt. Now I have too many kilts and I wear one almost every day, probably about 350 days in the year.

I can't say definitely the first time - everyone who could have told me is no longer available for consultation - but I remember one incident, due to the pain no doubt, it was Springtime - I was wearing sandals with my kilt, I lept over a hedge at school and damaged my ankle - my foot swelled so much I could not buckle the sandal strap, AND I landed on the kilt pin and hurt my leg.

Possibly, then, around my sixth birthday.

It would not have been my seventh - different school with taller hedges.

I wore the kilt for the first time around Xmas of 1963, for family events, my sister's christening, and my uncle's wedding. I turned 3 in February, 1964.

Aged 8 or 9, at school when living in Scotland. Kilts were not part of the uniform, but we were sometimes invited to wear them at special events.

I was a late starter. First wore a kilt at age 50 to a friend's 50th birthday bash.

A borrowed one for Halloween in my mid-30's, a belted plaid ("great kilt") for reenacting a couple of years later, my first modern kilt of my own as a 40th birthday present from my family. That was 14 years ago....
