I see that the last kilt I bought was in 1995 and it cost £457. Thank goodness I can still fit in it!

May I ask where you get your kilts from Jock?

Yes of course. "Chisholms" of Inverness, they are situated at the back of the castle.

Paul: I have a tank from Lochcarron ($540US a year ago), 2 B&S casuals ($155US each) and a SK. Now, I absolutely could not be happier with the quality/fit/cost of my B&S casuals (thanks again for the recommendation, McMurdo!). However, there's NOTHING like putting on my tank! Having a heavyweight wool kilt custom-tailored to my specifications is a truly rewarding and proud experience every time I put it on. By all means go for it; you will not be disappointed!

My 8yrd MacGregor was in the third tier, and that's about as high as I can go with my current budget level. However, I would not rule out spending anything in tier four some time in the future.

There are a number of outlets who charge premium prices for their product and there is nothing wrong with that if customers are happy to pay but I've found that with a little careful shopping around you can usually find stuff of equal quality for substantially less.

    I paid about $350 for a made-to -measure 13 oz about 12-13 years ago--my first kilt.

The newest one will cost me about $500 by the time it's all over. Of course, I bought the tartan on sale and kept it safely in the corner of a year-and-a-half until my dollar savings plan added up to the princely sum a good kilter charges to make it for me.

So--$500 or so this time around.

I have two kilts. My 18oz Gordon cost £160 on e-bay in 2004 and my 13oz 9 yard Douglas cost £180 in 1993. I therefore voted for £350+.

I paid US$515 in 2001 for my made-to-measure 16-oz kilt in Scott Red made by Locharron.

My "perfect" kilt is my Newsome box pleat in the Sackett tartan - so Matt's price, with me providing the fabric, but adding in the cost of having the yardage woven ... whatever that works out to be (I forget exactly), but worth every penny.
